Tyrangel Royal Marines Report – Nov. 05, 609 ER

Orcs Repelled By Adventurers
By Jacob Whitaker VI
Journalist, Tyrangel Royal Marines
Written November 05, 609ER

Captain Douglas Shuyler was awakened from his evening sleep by a knock on the door – The Orcs had made camp after evading the Tyrangel Royal Marines for more than 3 weeks. The Captain and I arose slowly from our military cots, the corporal bringing us hot coffee to help us wake up. The Captain called for his personal trooper to get out of bed and together the three of us heard the report about the Orcs and began our plan for entering Tyrangel city to get help.

Baroness Amaris had given all of her Military resources to Captain Douglas and six of her Military Field Commanders – and now they sat in a room together. An hour ago an Arch wizard in the employ of Tyrangel Army had returned with the news of the Orcs, and now 4 were present at the table with a half dozen field commanders. The report was the same with each of them. The Orcs had been on the run since the Nobles and Adventurers attacked them in early October 609ER. At sundown they made camp. Our men were nearly exhausted from the chase and if we are to attack them we will need help.. The Arch wizards were dispatched to create Gate Gems that would teleport groups to the area where the Orcs are, and then they had used their own Gate Gems to get them back to Tyrangel City.

Baroness Amaris spread her court members across the Marentha Countryside. They had been able to keep the Orcs away from Farmsteads and smaller Villages while the Marentha army had been posted just outside the walls of the villages. The biggest casualty of the war thus far have been taken by the Merchants of Tyrangel – and their patron, The Huntington’s, were now relying on the military and the noble court of Marentha to decrease or eliminate the attacks upon the merchant caravans.

The Merchants had taken a beating thus far. More than 2 dozens Merchants had resurrected and nearly a hundred caravan guardsmen. The Orcs used military tactics that could only have been taught to them by the Robed Magicians who manipulate them. The military leaders were still perplexed as to what the overall goal of the Orcs were. They had been upsetting the mercantile trade for 3 months now, but seemed only intent on causing chaos among the people and attacking the Merchant caravans.

The Nobles had decided to have their gathering this month in Tyrangel City, so Captain Douglas went immediately to see what resources might be available. Finding Baron Hector Medavante and Sir Ehlrick of the Duchy of Dragonaire, he immediately gave them a brief report and a gate gem. There were 8 of them in all. They seemed to have come from Dragonaire together, and/or part of the Barons court. A mix of races and personalities, they embarked on the mission the Captain had just given them. Walking outside to the pathway 20 feet from the tavern, the Baron activated the gate gem “Activate, with mystic force I activate this gate gem” and a 6’ wide shimmering Gate opened within seconds. Luther Huss was the first to go through, followed by Bird Song Tuneweaver. The Baron, Sir Ehlrik and Laventh the Drae went through next, and Markus, Defias, and Mary Lin brought up the rear. They found themselves in a wooded area with a variety of lean-tos spread out in front of them. They could hear snoring so they krept up slowly and entered the first small makeshift hut. Three Orcs were sleeping. The group spread their party out and the Orcs were dead before they woke. Laventh gave the signal for the scouts to check the next lean to and see if Orcs were asleep as well. They were able to kill 2 groups in their sleep before they came across an encampment that was awake and talking. They rushed in and attacked the Orcs, killing them in a few minutes battle.  They rushed from 1 hut to another, killing the Orcs they could find, almost in a frenzy – the rain a drizzle and a light haze of rain hung in the air made the scenario frightening and rushed at the same time. Finally, one band of Orcs sent a runner to alert the others, but Laventh and Sir Ehlrik took off running after him. The Orc turned around a corner of a lean-to and swirled around, weapon and shield ready for battle. Both Sir Ehlrik and Laventh engaged the Orc at the same time, but he was perhaps one of the best fighters they had encountered, dealing weapon strike after weapon strike against the two while they cut into its flesh with every second. Sir Ehlrik went down under 2 mighty blows delivered by the Orc and it turned toward the near unconscious Laventh. Laventh defended himself from the near dead Orc while trying to find a hole in the Orcs armor or shield. After a harrowing few seconds, Laventh landed the blow that killed the Orc and he ran to Sir Ehlrik and cured him. Together they bound back toward the sound of their comrades in battle against a nearly a dozen Orcs and more on the way. A few more minutes of battle and the Orcs stopped attacking, either all dead or they retreated to a safer haven. The adventurers removed some of the Orcs teeth, remembering the tradesmen in town earlier, and searched the buildings and the area, looting treasure like most adventurers, and they stepped back through the gate. They found 2 scrolls which revealed some of the information about what was going on – the Tyrangel Assassins guild has it in for Baroness Amaris and they are attacking all parts of Marentha surrounding the Gillymath Forest.

A 2nd group of 8 adventurers that included several wild elves, a barbarian, a scout, immediately volunteered to take the 2nd quest and the Captain gave them a Gate Gem too. Lohan, Kiba and Daniel, all Barbarians, had approached Captain Douglas and offered their help. The Captain graciously accepted and turned over their information and a Gate Gem to Lohan. Lohan and his group went and recruited Dracos, Waltz, Sinai, Ferris and Spark Plug, of whom brought a variety of personalities, skills and experience to the less experienced Wild Elves. The group returned about an hour after they left, the drizzle and the chill making nighttime combat a bit more unbearable than the adventurers expected. Dracos gave his report to the Captain – they had encountered dozens and dozens of Orcs in the area where they gated in, and killed all that they encountered. They also found 2 scrolls which revealed that the Tyrangel Assassins guild has it in for Baroness Amaris and they hired 150+ Mages to support the effort.

Shortly after the Court of Lohan departed for their adventure, Captain Douglas was approached by Merchant Lord Ramond Huntington concerning the raids upon the Merchant Caravans. Lord Huntington was quite upset that the attacks by the Orcs hadn’t been stopped and wanted to know what the Baroness of Marentha and the Tyrangel Royal Marines had done to eliminate the Orc threat. After giving proper respect, the Captain instructed Lord Huntington to hire additional guardsmen to meet the Orc forces, eliminate all but the absolutely necessary shipments of mercantile throughout Marentha and Faradhen and also to plan his caravan movements with the Marenthan Army stationed outside the city so they can escort the caravan to the next patrol and so on until they reach the destination city. Additionally, the Captain assured Lord Huntington that Baroness Amaris was doing everything in her power, and more, to eliminate the threat presented by the Orcs. “She and her court have been stopping the attacks on the villages, cities and townships of Marentha. The military has had a tight grip upon the safety of the people but those that travel the roads between cities are much more difficult to protect from attacks. Collaborating with the Tyrangel Army will decrease and perhaps eliminate the attacks upon the Merchant Caravans. “

The Captain also spoke with Baroness Akoya, who was concerned that the adventurers would be attacking Orcs while the rest of the townsfolk and Nobles defended the city against the Liche. The captain assured her that the resources of the town would be available when the Liche attacked later that night, of which they were. Being satisfied with the Captain’s answers to her questions, the Baroness approved the Captains undertaking to attack the Orcs.

The Captain held a meeting with the field commanders in the morning and reiterated all that the adventurers had found out. The Orcs broke camp in the morning and began their movement through the wooded area and plains of Marentha – the Tyrangel Royal Marines not far behind them. “And so, we continue to follow the Orcs until they either camp again or they turn and attack us.” Said the Captain at the end of the meeting.
